She was alone again. Tears slipped down her face as she sat hunched in a corner. All around her pictures and sketches lay scattered on the floor. A scrambled chronicle of her life, of their lives. They were all so different. Some were old with large creases running through them, others were new, shiny. There were colored ones and black and white ones; Photographs and sketches. So many memories that had suddenly become meaningless. It was unexpected, after all this time he was the last person she thought would cause her any pain. Reaching out a trembling hand, she snatched a photo off the ground and stared at the image forever captured on its surface. It was a simple picture, poorly taken and rather blurry, but it held so much meaning, or at least it used to. In this small window to the past, two young blonds held each other close while grinning like there was no tomorrow. One was a boy with spiky hair and enchanting blue eyes; eyes that still captivated her, even in picture form. He looked excited, relieved, and happier than the happiest person on earth. The picture caught him in the act of grabbing his companion around the waist and spinning around with her, her pale hair flying about her smiling face and her light blue eyes sparkling with joy. Both their cheeks were dusted with a light blush. Underneath the image, in neat handwriting, was a caption.

Roxas and Namine-together at last

She remembered that day like it was yesterday. It was the day that Roxas had finally gotten the courage to ask her out. Now just seeing his name, thinking his name, made her sick. She didn't hate him, she couldn't hate him. Despite everything she still loved him. But did she even matter to him anymore? It was confusing, nothing made sense anymore. The only person who she had ever loved had just gotten up and left her. Why? Why did he do that? He had promised he would never leave her, promised to never hurt her. Now all that was left of the happy girl in the photograph was a an empty shell, a broken angel that fell from her place in heaven only to find the hard, cruel earth there to meet her.

On another side of town, in a small dingy café, sat the boy from the photograph. Tucked away in a corner, he stared deep into his cup of coffee that had long since grown cold. Distress was clear on his face. That and pain. Events from the previous day replayed in his head. The day he had broken up with Namine. As much as it hurt him, he had to do it. She deserved someone else, someone better. Namine was a princess and she deserved a prince, not some guy who can't even find a steady job. True, they were still only in high school and they did have plenty of time to figure things out but someone like her didn't need someone like him. She was an accomplished artist with so much going for her and he was just holding her back. Of course it hurt him. When he saw that look of pain cross her face he felt as though his own heart had been ripped from his chest, leaving him hollow and empty inside. It didn't matter though. She had recovered quickly and accepted it before walking away. She hadn't even spared him a parting glance. Namine was fine without him. He was an unnecessary burden. Things were better now. And yet, and yet he still couldn't get her out of his head. The way her eyes light up whenever he was near her, how she skipped like a child when she thought no one was looking. All these little things that made Namine, Namine. His thoughts were finally interrupted when the owner of the café came over and politely asked him to leave. Shocked, Roxas finally took notice of how dark it had gotten and how late it had become.  As he made his way out of the warm building and into the cold night he checked his cellphone.

1 missed call

Confused, the blond checked to see if the caller had left a voicemail and upon discovering one decided to listen to it. It was probably a telemarketer but at least it would distract him from the ache in his chest, if only for a moment. The first thing he heard was the robotic voice announcing the time the message was received, March 28, 2012 -- yesterday. Something stirred in the back of his mind as he heard the day but he quickly dismissed it. Instead he listened for the message. What he heard almost made him drop his phone. It wasn't a telemarketer's voice coming from the phone, it was Namine's. Immediately he stopped walking, pressing the phone closer to his ear in attempt to catch every word.

Good morning Roxas! Do you remember what day it is today? Probably not, you're horrible when it comes to dates. Always were. At this point her voice stopped for a moment and muffled chuckles could be heard. Anyways, I'm just calling to remind you that it's our anniversary today! Can you believe we've stayed together this long? And they always say high school relationships never last long. Guess we're just proving them all wrong. Since it's our anniversary I just wanted to say that I love you Roxas. And I really truly mean it. I love you. You've always been there for me, like my knight in shining armor. I know sometimes you think you're not good enough, and that I deserve someone better, but the truth is, I don't want anyone else. Because I already have the best guy in the world right here by my side, even if he can't see it himself. Her voice grew softer as it reached the end, dropping to the point where he could barely make out her words. At first he thought she had hung up but then he heard it. One last whispered sentence right before the ending beep sounded. And it was that short sentence that caused the tears to start to fall. Just…just don't leave me, okay?

It was then that he finally broke. All his reasons, all his excuse just fell apart right then and there. The only thing that mattered was that he broke his princess's heart after swearing to protect it; crushed it right on their anniversary. All this time he was thinking of what was best for her without even to bother to ask if it was what she wanted. Before he knew it, he had started running. What was first a jog became a sprint, and what was once a sprint became a blind dash towards the nearest form of transportation. Hailing a taxi, he hurriedly got in and gave directions. The city flew past in an unrecognizable blur. Time passed without him noticing. In what seemed like seconds, he was on the outskirts of town, standing outside the old worn-out house that she called home. Without a second thought he ran to the old door and shoved it open. Taking the stairs two at a time, he made his way to the place he knew she'd be, her sanctuary and art studio. What he found there nearly destroyed him. There, curled up in the corner of the room, broken and sad like a cast-away doll was the girl he had given his heart to. Instinct took over at that point; the urge to protect her overrode any worries of rejection or hatred. He simply did what his heart told him and that was to walk over and take the heartbroken girl into his arms. At first he feared she wouldn't take him back. He knew he didn't deserve it but he couldn't bring himself to leave her again. All these doubts soon melted away the moment she wrapped her thin arms around him, returning his embrace. Words were not necessary in this situation. They both knew the other's heart without having to make a single sound. Still Roxas felt the need to say something, something to reassure her and let her know he regretted everything.

"I'll never leave you again. I promise." He whispered, trying to make her understand, make her see just how much he wished the past day had never happened. For a long time there was no response. Then finally, Namine pulled back a bit revealing a red, blotchy, tear-stained face. For a moment they just stared at each other. Then, slowly but surely, a small ghost of a smile made its way across the small girl's face before she whispered two words to him. Two small words that let him know that all was forgiven and that everything was going to be alright.

"I know."
Yes! I'm actually incredibly excited about this right here. This is my first time writing something for Rokunami Day (or anything Rokunami actually ^.^") and I think it came out quite nicely. Although it's a bit more angsty then I thought it would be... Normally my works are a bit more happy but this just sorta popped into my head. It was actually partially inspired by a line from a song. The song being Running Up That Hill by Placebo and the line being "You don't want to hurt me, but see how deep the bullet lies." Apparently the connection isn't as obvious as I thought but the way I see it the song is about unintentionally hurting the ones you love while doing your best to avoid just that. Sad but sweet. Anyways, enough about that. Enjoy the story and don't get thrown off by the slightly depressing start. It has a happy ending, I promise! ^.^

I don't own these fabulous characters, just the plot.
